Bent Posture: Most Neglected Problem with Hemiplegia

Hemiplegia (weakness on one side of the body) can cause the body to bending sideways. This is called laterally side bending. If the body is left to stay in this side bend position, the soft tissue structures on one side of the body will become shortened. This can make walking difficult. This can also create low back pain. The way to treat this is to stretch (elongate) on the shortened side of the body and retrain the body to maintain a “straighter” position. This video is part one of the best exercises to correct this issue.

My 85 year old uncle had a stroke and has been in hospital now for 5 weeks with hemiplegia and the only improvement he has had is eating soft mushed food and drinking thickened drinks. he cannot move his left side of his mouth, arm, hand. leg, feet. He is very scared and cries (I had never seen him cry before) and his family is not encouraging saying they don't believe he will ever walk again, fish again, hunt again, or ever be able to go to the washroom on his own again. He is always complaining but manly about pin.

I have stenosis and scoliosis with hip rotation so this is a real problem for me. Walking is difficult and I struggle with balance problems. I've been exercising and trying to get stronger but it doesn't seem to help much with balance.

I have right-sided hemiparesis due to a brain bleed as an infant. I'm thirty five and I have recently started doing pushups for bilateral strengthening. After a few weeks, I noticed that my right humerus was shorter than my left. This was not part of the plan of taking better care of myself. It's one more difference that is now painfully obvious to me as someone who was already self-conscious of their body due to Cerebral Palsy. Ugh.
The right side of my body isn't on fire like it usually is when I engage those muscles. I am definitely seeing results by doing pushups, because I have to engage my core to stay level on the floor. My body isn't a complete mess when I circumduct my shoulder because my other muscles and joints aren't having to work as hard to keep me upright.
